Shirley Chisholm – First African American Woman in Congress
Shirley Chisholm passed away in 2005. She was an absolutely amazing woman. Not only was she the first African American Woman to serve in the United States Congress, but she was also the first woman to seek the nomination for President of the United States. She did this in 1972 and while she wasn’t nominated to run for president, she did get 151 of the delegates votes. I wrote to Ms. Chisholm a few years ago and got a really cool letter back. First, she had amazing handwriting. Second, she sent her letter on a photocopied page that had a picture of her on it. In the letter she says:
Dear Students:
You must take advantage of every opportunity available! Study and pay attention to your teachers who are preparing you for a successful adult. In whatever you do look only to God and Conscience for approval. Always aim high!
